Blaugust the 12th: A Blaugust AMA

One of the cool things the Blaugustians are doing over on our little Nook is a pass-it-forward AMA started by the MMO Gypsy. I received my question from CommanderFlynn of the Tankquisition blog:

When it comes to RPG's and MMO's, do you have a specific play-style in mind when you see it? Does that ever change after you play around in the game space?
I initially interpreted "playstyle" as class/role and thought, "No, I don't think I have a specific playstyle, nor does that vague playstyle change much after playing."

But I remembered, way back in the foggy past. I did exactly that, with the very first MMO I played: World of Warcraft. When my gamer friend first forced convinced me to give WoW a try, the first character I created was a dwarf hunter named Oakheart. I had some fun with him, but the mechanic of rested XP tempted me into creating alts, and I soon had a sizable stable of them. My fourth character created was a female human priest named Rowanblaze—and, well, you can probably see where this is going.

As I've matured as a gamer (read: learned how to play), I've come to realize I have certain preferences. My first characters now tend to be healers. However, I am still an altoholic (that's a playstyle, right?), so I usually end up trying most, if not all, of the available classes and roles in a game. I almost always play solo, if I am not in a duo with Scooter (also a playstyle).

In addition, in the almost five years that I have been playing with Scooter, I have become less and less likely participate in large group/guild activities like TeamSpeak. Well, the main games I have played lately have voiced cutscenes, and TeamSpeak detracts from my immersion (or even comprehension). So that's not really Scooter's fault. But we usually play complementary roles when we play together, which is about 40 percent of my playtime and almost all of hers. We hardly have any reason to to group up with other people, not that I am averse to the idea exactly.

What was the question?
